POINT OF INTEREST

HEART of the SPICE ROUTE

Hidden in the far reaches of eastern Indonesia, the Banda Islands remain one of the archipelago’s most storied destinations. Once the heart of the global spice trade, these volcanic islands reveal colonial forts, nutmeg groves and tranquil harbours shaped by centuries of maritime history. Life moves gently along palm-lined shores and colourful waterfront villages, where traditions remain closely tied to the sea and the rhythms of island life endure.

Surrounding the islands, the waters of Banda offer some of the most pristine coral reefs in Indonesia. Dramatic volcanic drop-offs descend into deep blue seas, where vibrant coral gardens attract reef sharks, schooling fish and seasonal hammerhead sightings. Divers and snorkellers explore thriving reefs and spectacular underwater walls, while quiet anchorages and remote islands make the Banda archipelago a remarkable destination for both history and extraordinary marine life
